Tulip Talk 1.0: what the version number now promises

By Tulip Talk Team ·

Tulip Talk has been live, used and improved for months. The 1.0 release line marks a more stable foundation for what comes next.

Nothing about your account, your streak or your progress changes. What changes is what the number means from here on.

Why now, and not earlier

Version 0.x is a promise that things may still move around. We kept it there while the shape of the app was still settling — where practice lives, how you get around on a phone, what happens when you are offline.

That settled over the last few releases. The Learn page became a short list you can read on one screen instead of two thousand pixels of scrolling. The bar at the bottom became the way you move around, with a guided tour for new learners. Speaking got its own place. Notifications stopped covering the buttons you were reaching for.

1.0 says those decisions are ours to keep stable, not yours to keep relearning.

What it means in practice

Changes get harder, on purpose. From here, anything that would break how the app works for you needs a new major version, not a quiet update. That is the actual promise in a version number, and it is the one worth making.

The apps and website share one project. The website can update sooner; Android and Windows releases follow their stores' review schedules, so their version numbers may differ for a while.

What we spent this release on

Mostly the unglamorous half: a security sweep across the project's dependencies, and a few things that made the app feel unfinished on a phone.

  • The theme switch left the phone header — it is under Account → Appearance, where a setting you change once belongs. Your header now holds the logo and your avatar, and nothing else competing for space.
  • A button on the grammar map whose label spilled outside its own outline now wraps properly, so what you tap matches what you see.
  • A sync that quietly failed no longer claims you have progress waiting to upload when you do not.

What is not done

Plenty. The backlog is public and it is long — a Dutch, Ukrainian and Arabic interface that reaches every page, more of the mobile redesign, and a longer list of small things people have told us about.

1.0 is not a claim that the work is finished. It is a claim that the foundations are stable enough to build on without moving the ground under you.

Tell us what is wrong

If something looks broken or gets in your way, the feedback page reaches us directly — you will need to be signed in, so we can follow up with you. Several of the fixes above started exactly that way.

Dank je wel for using it while we got here.
